Can You Use CBD for THC Side Effects?

It’s widely believed that CBD can reduce or lessen the THC high, helping users enjoy both cannabinoids. But does CBD’s ability to reduce THC’s negative effects have any scientific backing?

There is a substantial amount of peer-reviewed evidence suggesting that CBD may help manage THC’s adverse effects. In this short review, we’ll cover some of the latest and most relevant studies.

The Latest Research on CBD and THC Side Effects

2023: Daily Cannabidiol Administration for 10 Weeks Modulates Amygdalar and Hippocampal Resting-State Functional Connectivity in Cannabis Users

This small clinical study, one of the latest published on the topic, is worth considering. The study involved 18 cannabis users who reported cognitive side effects. The researchers concluded that CBD exposure “may restore/reduce functional connection differences reported in marijuana users,” noting increased functional activity between the amygdala and lingual gyrus at the end of the study.

2021: Effects of Daily D9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) Alone or Combined with Cannabidiol (CBD) on Cognition-Based Behavior and Activity in Adolescent Nonhuman Primates

If the results from this animal study hold true, CBD may help mitigate certain THC-related side effects more than others. The study aimed to determine if CBD could reduce THC’s side effects in primates. The researchers found that CBD prevented THC-induced vomiting, suggesting that CBD could help with THC-related nausea. However, they did not find that CBD significantly reduced other THC side effects.

Human Trials on CBD and THC Side Effects

2023: Assessment of Orally Administered D9-Tetrahydrocannabinol When Coadministered with Cannabidiol on D9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics in Healthy Adults

The relationship between CBD-rich products and THC may be more complex than previously thought. In a recent study, 18 participants were given brownies containing either THC or a placebo, and others with THC combined with CBD. The THC+CBD participants reported more side effects than those who took THC+placebo, contradicting the common belief that CBD reduces THC’s negative effects. Other research suggests that CBD may still help mitigate THC side effects in certain circumstances.

2023: Effects of Acute Cannabidiol with and without Cannabidiol on Neural Reward Expectation in Adults

This study did not provide conclusive results, but it’s still important to consider recent research on CBD’s effectiveness in treating THC-related side effects. Researchers studied the effects of CBD in adolescent THC users and found that CBD did not suppress THC’s impact on the “anticipatory response to money.” The study included 47 participants, making it the largest clinical study conducted to date. However, it may have been designed incorrectly, as it didn’t fully consider the subtleties of CBD’s interactions with THC.
