Furry Friends: The Benefits of Pets for Elderly Aussies

We all love having a furry friend around. Perhaps it’s a doggy that keeps you warm at night? Or, perhaps it’s a kitten who comes and goes as they please but cuddles up to you just when you need it? Regardless of the type of pet, they are a great source of companionship and this is especially so for elderly Aussies!

But it’s not just their companionship that makes them beneficial to senior citizens – let’s take a look at some of their extra benefits below:

  1. They provide a sense of purpose

The best aged care Campbelltown has often recommends pets for the elderly as they provide a sense of purpose (or pawpose!). They help elderly Aussies maintain a stable routine and one that keeps them both physically and mentally active.

  1. They help people maintain form connections

It’s so true: pets help us form connections wherever we take them. Because, after all, who doesn’t love walking down the street and coming across a playful doggy and their friendly owner? It’s a joyful experience that can invigorate a person’s day and help the dog owner form a new connection with someone in their neighbourhood.

And that’s just going on walks. Taking the dog to the park is one of the best ways for elderly Australians to form and maintain connections as they have the chance to meet other dog owners.

  1. They help reduce feelings of loneliness

One of the unfortunate downsides of ageing is feeling lonely and isolated. In fact, a Monash University-led study found that one in five older Australians feel loneliness, and especially those aged 75 and above. Whilst aged care programs like in-home support can assist with feelings of loneliness, another great way to reduce feelings of isolation is through having a pet.

They make for wonderful company and can greatly reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. This is especially so when you consider that they are a great way to help elderly Aussies get out of the house and into the neighbourhood!

  1. They help their owners relax

Pets – when treated well – live happily in the present moment. They are there just getting by and enjoying pats, treats and walks. As such, their present nature can help their owners to feel more in the present moment, too. This can greatly reduce feelings of loneliness, isolation and any anxiety that may come with such feelings.

They are a great source of relaxation for many reasons, with petting them being incredibly calming whilst taking them out for walks is great for releasing endorphins. What’s more, their wonderful companionship is one of the best ways to improve our mood and this is another great way in which they help us relax.

  1. They help with fitness

As we age, it’s important that we maintain a healthy level of exercise. This is especially important for elderly Aussies, as exercise not only helps them maintain a healthy body and mind, but also helps ward off age-related physical and mental conditions.

As such, having a little exercise machine around to go for walks and play at home is one of the best ways to keep fit in a fun and friendship-filled manner. Cats and dogs both love to play, and so they can be one of the best personal trainers when it comes to encouraging some gentle exercise.

Pets are great companions for older Australians and one of the best ways to keep their mental and physical wellbeing at a higher level!
